Activity # 13 Styles and Movements

“Bullfight was painted by Pablo Picasso in the year 1901; Tragedy also by Pablo Picasso in 1903. Both painting are from the 19th century, they were both painted by a French artist. They are from the same culture and period, but the movement and the style are different.
The Bullfight Scene by Pablo Picasso was painted in 1901, oil on canvas which reflects the French culture. This art work was one of Picasso own experiences which brought him to painted such painting. He used a naturalistic style which all the objects are clearly defined, the use of complementary colors and ground to create kinetic art that is related to his style. It also demonstrated the use of the open palette which all colors are permitted. This painting was reflected by Fauvism, art movement which was introduced in the 19th century. Fauvism a short-lived but influential art movement in France in the early 20th century that emphasized bold, arbitrary, expressive color ( Getlein, 583).This painting focuses more on the pile of dead horses, which the artist painted a red spot on the white horse in the left hand corner of the painting. This painting was also reflected by the movement realism. Realism is broadly, any art in which the goal is to portray forms in the natural work in a highly faithful manner. Specifically with Gustave Courbet, which fostered the idea the everyday people and events are fit subjects for important art (Getlein,587).
“Tragedy” by Pablo Picasso painted 1903, oil on wood canvas was said to be painted over the painting Bullfight by the National Art Gallery. Tragedy was also painted in the French culture and after a personal experience of Picasso. The painting was created in the 19th century during the Blue Period. During this period the artist painted paintings essentially in the shades of blue and blue-green , like in the Tragedy. He painted the figures in dark clothing to show misery and despair. The painting was reflected by the expressionism movement. Expressionism is an art movement of the early 20th century, which claimed the right to distort visual appearances in order to express psychological or emotional states, especially the artist’s own personal feelings(Getlein,583). The artist use naturalistic style to portray the visible world that emphasizes the objective appearances of the figures in the painting.

Both artworks were painted by the same artist and same period, but different in style and movement was used to create the artworks, “Bullfight and Tragedy.”

Activity # 11 Rewrite

“Bullfight” which has a medium of oil on canvas was painted during the Modern Period, which spans from 1800 to 1945. The modern period consist of 145 years, beginning in 1800 to 1945. This period was driven by technological progress and characterized by rapid change of society (505).The culture of this painting is the French Culture. Bullfight was one of Picasso earlier painting after going to see a Bullfight with his dad, which influences him to paint the Bullfight scene. Impressionism has influenced this artwork. Impressionism portrays the daily life, especially the leisure activities (584) and in this painting the activity show’s a bullfight between a bull and the matador (the man).
The Blue Period of Picasso is the period between 1901 and 1904, when he painted essentially monochromatic paintings in shades of blue and blue-green, like in the “Tragedy.” The artwork was painted in the French Culture. Tragedy” was painted by the same artist in 1903 oil on canvas. The color blue was chosen to show misery and despair of the figures and the death of a close friend. He used the different shades of the color blue to underline the melancholic styles of his subject. The use of expressionism was to express the psychological or emotional states, especially the artist’s own personal feelings (583).

Both painting were painted by French culture , but painted in different periods, reflecting how the artist felt.

“The Bullfight by Pablo Picasso was painted in 1901, one of his earlier paintings. It was one of his first paintings after going to see a Bullfight with his dad. It was painted in the French Culture. Theirs not much information about this painting, because Picasso used this canvas several times to paint his work of arts. Like the painting “Tragedy was painted over the’ Bullfight’ in 1903. The National Gallery of Art has shown ample evidence to suggest that he painted a large Bullfight composition on the wooden support (NAG), which now support the paintings the ‘ Tragedy ‘which was painted in 1903.

“Tragedy “by Pablo Picasso was painted at the turn of the 20th century. His personal life was very difficult at the beginning of the 20th century, as well as being a late teen, away from home for the first time and living in very poor conditions. “Tragedy” was painted from a French culture and painted in what he called the “The Blue Period”. The Blue period lasted from about 1900-1904. He used different shades of blue to underline the melancholic styles of his subjects. He was focusing on human misery and the death of a close friend, who committed suicide. This tragic loss added another layer to the psychological depths of the paintings from the Blue Period.

Activity#10-Mediums and Techniques

Pablo Picasso used oil on wood and oil on canvas in order to create his artworks the “Bullfight and the “Tragedy. Oil is a non aqueous medium which can be diluted with turpentine or mineral spirits.(Getlein, 168). Medium a liquid that holds the particles of pigment together without dissolving them (Getlein, 168). The medium effects the way I see the artworks though certain oils used to create the paintings.

In the “Bullfight” the artist appear to use thin brush strokes to outline all the figures in the painting. He used a symbol of a dying horse being brave and the bull being the brutality and darkness. The dead horse in the Bullfight is the most important thing to me in the painting because the artist made the dead horse standout by using the color red . He used oil painted consist of pigment compound with oil, usually linseed oil. The oil acts as a binder; creating as it dries a transparent film in which the pigment is suspended (Getlein, 172).
In the “Tragedy” the paint is thin because of the hidden brush strokes to show that the painting appear to be painted over an earlier painting according to the National Gallery of Art. For -example, the thin paint from an earlier images on the same canvas one can see the development of the artwork. The figures in the painting Tragedy stand out because the artist painted them in the color blue to let us see that the figures were cold and alone.

In both paintings , the characteristics of oil paint is that it dries very slowly. It means that the colors can be blended subtly, layers of paint can be applied on the top of other layers with little dangers of separating or cracking and the artist can rework sections of the painting almost indefinitely ( Getlein, 173). The two works are similar, because the paint is applied to a support, which is the canvas, paper, wood panel, wall, or other surface on which the artist works. The support may be prepared to receive paint with a ground or primer; a preliminary coating (Getlein,168). The qualities in both paintings let me see that the artist intentions was to paint how he felt in what we call the Blue Period and the Rose Period.

activity #9 rewrite

The wide spread use of the camera has change the appearance of visual art by the use of film making, video cameras and the computer. Photographers use a variety of techniques to undercut the objectivity of the camera to produce gauzy and atmospheric images that seemed more like art ( Getlein, 219). It opened photography to amateurs, and it quickly became a popular hobby. Almost any where a person could go, a camera could now go; almost anything a person could see, a camera could record ( Getlein, 215).

In film, new technology made it possible so that visual art could tell stories through film and that stories could unfold over time and in motion, as they did in life or on stage in the theater (Getlein, 229). The first filmmakers were entrepreneurs. They worked alone or started up their on business.
We can now view images through what we call a video camera. It was not until the 1960s that a portable video camera was marketed to the general public together with magnetic tape for recording (Getlein, 243). Video cameras has brought new life to the meaning of visual art, because you can video special events, like weddings and sporting events.

The personal computer, the compact disc, the scanner; the World Wide Web, the digital video disk and the digital camera has change the visual art in which we can download images from a camera onto the computer.

In the invention of the camera, it has brought new technology to the world of art as well as visual art to those who want to explore the making of films or taking pictures.

The invention and the widespread use of the camera has brought a phenomenon effect on the world today .One way is that the camera has changed the world by the quantity of images that could be created. activity #7 midterm

Art can be express in many different themes and purposes. In this exhibition, I will discuss and explore six paintings by Marc Chagall under the theme “Invention and Fantasy”. When you say the word “Fantasy” you think about imaginary things. Fantasies are imaginary things that make people happy and sometimes sad up by people. The paintings are from the Modern Art Museum. The artist Marc Chagall shows us the viewer the similarities and differences of each of his six paintings.
One similarity of the six paintings is that three of the paintings were painted with water color and pencil on paper, two of the paintings were painted with water color, pencil and ink on paper and one painting was painted on oil on canvas. All six of these painting were painted in 1942. In two of the paintings the artist used animal costumes to capture the eyes of the viewer. For-example in the painting “A Cat”, a woman is wearing a cat mask and a tail to bring the fantasy to life in begin a cat. In the painting “A Bandura Player, a Bear and Zemhira” the artist uses an illusion of a two headed figure. He also used the principle element shape to define the two figures dimensional having identifiable boundaries, created by lines. In this painting he truly used his invention to bring out the fantasy of the painting. He made a costume where the two head figure is dress like a violin.
The artist Chagall uses primary colors in five of his paintings to bring out the figures. In the painting “Over Vitebsk” the artist uses proportion to let the viewer see the objects in the painting. Proportions are appropriate dimensions or a harmonious arrangement of parts. Also in the painting “Over Vitesk” he painted the figure in dark colors to capture the naked eye of the people viewing this painting. For example, the figure is flying over the town with a cane and bag over his shoulder all painted dark in color. Also in the painting the artist let the viewer see the tall buildings painted in primary colors to bring out the texture of the painting. In all six paintings the artist illustrates Kinetic art to show how the figures in the painting express some type of movement. For example, the painting “A Cat”, the woman is dancing with an umbrella as if she’s out side in the rain. The painting “Gypsies and Horse” the artist dressed the figures in many primary colors to show a celebration of a special event has occurred. The people and the figure in the costume a horse is dancing, laughing and having fun. All the paintings demonstrate the use of lines and contour lines which the artist used to identify its figures. Finally, the painting of “A Rooster” is more noticeable then any of the other paintings because the artist used black lines to outline the figure. This painting was also outstanding piece of art because he used both invention and fantasy to make painting be noticed.
These paintings demonstrate the artist use of design elements and principles, themes and purpose. One can say that all his paintings are extraordinary, because of the love the artist have for his artworks.
