Activity #5 Rewrite Rewrite

Tragedy is a painting of a despair and homelessness of a family down on their luck. It was painted in 1903 by Pablo Picasso. The theme for this artwork is “Looking outward: The Here and Now.” Looking outward: The Here and Now is a theme which art does not always have to reach so high. Sometimes it is enough just to look around ourselves and notice what our life is like here, now, in the place, at this time (Getlien, 64). This painting the Tragedy does have a purpose. The artist purpose of the painting the “Tragedy” was to show how the lives of people can change by the blinking of an eye. The painting doesn’t tell us much about the people in the painting, but he lets us know the viewer that the people in the painting is poor and cold by the look of their shabby clothing and they bare feet. Picasso uses Emphasis to support his theme by using the color blue and many elements of design and principles in his painting the
“Tragedy. “

Bullfight is a painting of enjoyment. It was painted in 1901 two years before the Tragedy by Pablo Picasso. The theme for this artwork is “Art and Art.” The theme Art and Art is an activity we have come to pursue for its own sake. As such, art can be its own theme, with no other purpose than to give visual pleasure or to pose another answer to the ongoing question:”What is art?” (Getlien, 76). The artist purpose of the painting is show art in a different perspective. The Bullfight is a sport which is entertained in Spain. The artist also used elements of design and principle to capture the eyes of the viewer by using primary colors. Primary colors are red, yellow, and blue are labeled with the numeral 1 they cannot be made by any mixture of other colors (Getlien, 95). He also used Emphasis to support his theme by use of primary colors. One thing he used in the Bullfight was visual element called Kinetic art. Kinetic art is art that moves (Getlien, 118).

In comparing and contrast the two artworks, “Tragedy “and “Bullfight”. You can say they both were painted by the same artist Pablo Picasso and were painted on oil on canvas. My opinion of the two artworks is that Picasso was looking at art in two different perspectives sometime in his life.

In 1901 Pablo Picasso painted a painting on oil canvas, “Bullfighting” and in 1903, he painted a painting in oil on wood , “The Tragedy.” He used elements of design and principle to create a visual harmony in both works.
In contrasting ,the two paintings, he used cool colors in “The Tragedy” and primary colors in the “Bullfighting”. Cool colors consist of dark colors and primary colors are red, yellow and blue. ( Getlien, 95)
Pablo ‘s painting the Bullfighting showed atmospheric perspective, which the objects in the painting is clearly defined, but the objects in the background appear less distinct. (Getlien, 113). Whereas in The Tragedy, he uses contour lines to create his figures. Contour lines are lines that describes the out line or edge of an object or figure(Getlien, 83). The artist Pablo Picasso uses ground in both paintings which the figures stand s out from the background ( Getlien, 168 ). The artist also used emphasis in both paintings. .

Pablo’s paintings “The Tragedy” and the “Bullfighting “was painted in period he called the Blue Period and the Rose period. In viewing these two paintings , the artist uses several elements of design and principle to describe his paintings. All the elements of design and principles that the artist Pablo Picasso used help to make his paintings more visual to the eyes of the viewer.

In the painting the Tragedy (1903) by Pablo Picasso the theme is misery and cold shown through his figures dress in shabby dark clothing. Picasso uses primary and secondary contour lines to differentiate the figures in the painting. The artist use many design elements or principles to support his theme. Yes , for-example he uses rhythm to show the movement of the waves in the water. Picasso also uses emphasis to support his theme by using the color blue. Pablo Picasso used ground to identify the mood and location . The mood creates a sad and depressing atmosphere. To bring out the texture of the ground Picasso use a mixture of cool colors to make the ground appear soft and smooth. He also focused on figures by drawing defined lines to distinguished them from the background.

Pablo Picasso’s Bullfight ( 1901) a colorful painting expressed the use of design principles and the elements . The theme of the painting the Bullfight is Man verses Beast. Because Pablo Picasso uses emphasis, negative shapes and linear perspective. Yes , he use emphasis to support his theme by placing the dead horses at the bottom left corner of the painting to draw more attention . Picasso uses negative shapes , primary colors and dark colors to distinguish the figures in the stands. The artist uses linear perspective to show images sitting in the stands which make our eyes see dots representing figures in mass which occupies space. Picasso also uses linear perspective a form in which drawings or paintings are given apparent depth by showing parallel lines as converging on the horizon.

In conclusion, in comparing and contrasting the two. Picasso uses emphasis to show the subject and theme of both paintings. He uses design principles of elements to describe his paintings. For-example he use the design principle element variety to show the difference between the two art works. Picasso uses cool colors in the painting “The Tragedy” and warm colors in the painting “The Bullfight”. The two paintings have little similarities but have a lot of differences because one was painted during the Blue period and the other during the Rose period.

The “Tragedy” (1903) oil on wood painting was painted by Pablo Picasso in 1903 and the “Bullfight” painted in 1901 on oil canvas. Picasso uses several design principles to make these artworks complete. Picasso applies the principle visual weight, emphasis and subordination to the painting “Tragedy” and applied emphasis, symmetrical balance and rhythm to the painting “Bullfight” to catch the eyes of the viewer.

Picasso used size and placement to emphasize the figures of the man, the woman and the child in the painting Tragedy. Picasso set the figures in the foreground so that their visual weights combine to form a single mass. Visual weight refers to that apparent “heaviness” or “lightness” of the forms arranged in a composition, as gauged by how insistently they draw our eyes (Getlein, 125). He also used emphasis by using the color blue throughout the painting to show that the figures in the painting are cold and it represents the sky and the ocean. Emphasis means that our attention is drawn more to certain parts of a composition than to others (Getlein, 134). Finally, he used subordination to show the background in the painting is painted in a lighter blue to help the figures standout. Subordination means that certain areas of the composition is purposely made less visually interesting, so that the areas of emphasis standout.

In the painting the “Bullfight” painted in 1901 on oil canvas the artist Pablo Picasso placed a pile of dead horses at the bottom left corner of the painting to show the use of the principle emphasis in this artwork. Emphasis means that our attention is drawn more to certain parts of a composition than to others ( Getlein, 134 ). The artist uses the principle symmetrical balance to distinguish between the dark colors and primary colors used in the painting. Symmetrical balance, the implied enter of gravity is the vertical axis, an imaginary line drawn down the center of the composition ( Getlein, 125). Finally, the artist uses rhythm because the painting appears to show movement of the bull and the figures in the painting. Rhythm is the pattern of elements suggesting movement or pace in something such as a work of art (Getlein,141).

Both paintings by Pablo Picasso were painted with the principle of design emphasis to catch the eyes of the viewers. He also used other principles of design to show contrast between the two artworks.

Pablo Picasso’s The Tragedy (1903) oil on wood painting used a number of design principles. The design principles that Picasso used are emphasis, rhythm and contour lines. Emphasis means to draw more attention to certain parts of a composition(Getlein,134). Pablo emphasis the color blue in different shades to show cold, gloomy, misery, sadness, the sky and the ocean. Rhythm is also expressed in the painting. Rhythm means patterns of elements suggesting movement or pace in something such as a work of art (Getlein, 141 ). Pablo uses rhythm to show movement of the waves of the water towards the positive figures in the painting. Another principle element use in the painting is contour lines, which are greatly express by the artist. Contour lines are lines that describe a outline of edges of an object or figure(Getlein,83 ).The artist expressed ground in the paintings. Ground is the surrounding visual information that the figure stands out from (Getlein, 89 ). Pablo Picasso used ground to identify the mood and location . The mood creates a sad and depressing atmosphere.

Pablo Picasso’s Bullfight ( 1901) a colorful painting expressed the use of design principles and the elements of design. Pablo Picasso uses emphasis, negative shapes and linear perspective. Emphasis can be defines as to draw more attention to certain parts of a composition ( Getlein , 134 ). By placing the dead horses at the bottom left corner of the painting. Picasso was able to use a overly size figure and red blood to be the focal point. Negative shapes are clearly defined in the painting the Bullfight. Negative shapes are shapes which are in the back ground( Getlein, 89 ). Picasso uses negative shapes , primary colors and dark colors to distinguish the figures in the stands ( Getlein, 113 ). Pablo Picasso also uses linear perspective a form in which drawings or paintings are given apparent depth by showing parallel lines as converging on the horizon ( Getlein, 108 ). The artist uses linear perspective to show images sitting in the stands which make our eyes see dots representing figures in mass which occupies space.

In conclusion, the paintings by Pablo Picasso can be describe by the principle of design variety. Variety in art means difference, which provided interest( Getlein , 122). Picasso uses cool colors in the painting “The Tragedy” and warm colors in the painting “The Bullfight.”

The two main balances the text in chapter 5 describes are symmetrical and Asymmetrical.

In this painting " The jumping Dog" by A. Rehse Berlin 1929 emphasize on symmertical balance by mirroring a dog jumping.

In this picture of the ying yang symbol it emphasize on a Asymmetrical Balance because both sides are not the same and they have a diaognal axis.

Activity #2

“Picasso painting “Bullfight Scene “ 1901 was painted in what we called The Rose Period. He used many warm colors like red and yellow to show happy thoughts not dark blue colors which he used in The Blue Period to show poverty and sadness in the painting The Tragedy. ( pg 95 “Living with Art“) He uses open palette which many colors are permitted. ( pg 98“Living with Art“). Picasso painted this picture on a oil palette that would set out the colors around the edges. ( pg 95 “Living with Art“) The artist uses linear perspective because the painting appear to have images sitting in the stadium which make our eyes see dots representing figures in mass which occupies space. ( pg 87and pg 108 “Living with Art“). The painting has Kinetic Art because the artist show motion in the painting whereas The Tragedy painting did not. The figure were standing in one spot in the painting. (pg 118“Living with Art” ) The painting appear to have negative shapes begin images which are in the back ground cool and primary colors. ( pg 95 “ Living with Art“) In comparing and contrasting the two works they are not similar in anyway because both were painted according to how Picasso felted at the time.
