Activity #2





“ Pablo Picasso painted” The Tragedy” from the 1903 a oil on wood painting portray human beings of destitute. He painted this picture in what he call The Blue Period which concentrated on images of poverty and emotional depression. (pg 525 “Living with Art“). In the painting ,the thin bare feet, shabby dressed figures are carefully drawn and the contours of their bodies reveal their thoughts. Their faces looked sad and hungry. The man appear to be in despair because of being poor and unable to provide for his family. In this painting Picasso uses cool colors with ground. (pg 95 and 89 “Living with Art“) . Picasso use different shades of blue to show cold ,gloomy, misery, despair, sadness and tragedy to show hopelessness of the figures being homeless and poor. ( pg 96 “Living with Art” ). He focus on figures by defined lines to distinguished them from the background. Picasso uses primary and secondary contour lines to express definition of the figures in the painting “The Tragedy“. (pg 83 “Living with Art“) To bring out the texture of the ground Picasso use a mixture of cool colors to make the ground appear soft and smooth.(pg103“Living with Art“) The artist also use light blue and dark blue to show their relative value between the sky and ocean.
