Activity #5 Rewrite Rewrite

Tragedy is a painting of a despair and homelessness of a family down on their luck. It was painted in 1903 by Pablo Picasso. The theme for this artwork is “Looking outward: The Here and Now.” Looking outward: The Here and Now is a theme which art does not always have to reach so high. Sometimes it is enough just to look around ourselves and notice what our life is like here, now, in the place, at this time (Getlien, 64). This painting the Tragedy does have a purpose. The artist purpose of the painting the “Tragedy” was to show how the lives of people can change by the blinking of an eye. The painting doesn’t tell us much about the people in the painting, but he lets us know the viewer that the people in the painting is poor and cold by the look of their shabby clothing and they bare feet. Picasso uses Emphasis to support his theme by using the color blue and many elements of design and principles in his painting the
“Tragedy. “

Bullfight is a painting of enjoyment. It was painted in 1901 two years before the Tragedy by Pablo Picasso. The theme for this artwork is “Art and Art.” The theme Art and Art is an activity we have come to pursue for its own sake. As such, art can be its own theme, with no other purpose than to give visual pleasure or to pose another answer to the ongoing question:”What is art?” (Getlien, 76). The artist purpose of the painting is show art in a different perspective. The Bullfight is a sport which is entertained in Spain. The artist also used elements of design and principle to capture the eyes of the viewer by using primary colors. Primary colors are red, yellow, and blue are labeled with the numeral 1 they cannot be made by any mixture of other colors (Getlien, 95). He also used Emphasis to support his theme by use of primary colors. One thing he used in the Bullfight was visual element called Kinetic art. Kinetic art is art that moves (Getlien, 118).

In comparing and contrast the two artworks, “Tragedy “and “Bullfight”. You can say they both were painted by the same artist Pablo Picasso and were painted on oil on canvas. My opinion of the two artworks is that Picasso was looking at art in two different perspectives sometime in his life.

In 1901 Pablo Picasso painted a painting on oil canvas, “Bullfighting” and in 1903, he painted a painting in oil on wood , “The Tragedy.” He used elements of design and principle to create a visual harmony in both works.
In contrasting ,the two paintings, he used cool colors in “The Tragedy” and primary colors in the “Bullfighting”. Cool colors consist of dark colors and primary colors are red, yellow and blue. ( Getlien, 95)
Pablo ‘s painting the Bullfighting showed atmospheric perspective, which the objects in the painting is clearly defined, but the objects in the background appear less distinct. (Getlien, 113). Whereas in The Tragedy, he uses contour lines to create his figures. Contour lines are lines that describes the out line or edge of an object or figure(Getlien, 83). The artist Pablo Picasso uses ground in both paintings which the figures stand s out from the background ( Getlien, 168 ). The artist also used emphasis in both paintings. .

Pablo’s paintings “The Tragedy” and the “Bullfighting “was painted in period he called the Blue Period and the Rose period. In viewing these two paintings , the artist uses several elements of design and principle to describe his paintings. All the elements of design and principles that the artist Pablo Picasso used help to make his paintings more visual to the eyes of the viewer.

In the painting the Tragedy (1903) by Pablo Picasso the theme is misery and cold shown through his figures dress in shabby dark clothing. Picasso uses primary and secondary contour lines to differentiate the figures in the painting. The artist use many design elements or principles to support his theme. Yes , for-example he uses rhythm to show the movement of the waves in the water. Picasso also uses emphasis to support his theme by using the color blue. Pablo Picasso used ground to identify the mood and location . The mood creates a sad and depressing atmosphere. To bring out the texture of the ground Picasso use a mixture of cool colors to make the ground appear soft and smooth. He also focused on figures by drawing defined lines to distinguished them from the background.

Pablo Picasso’s Bullfight ( 1901) a colorful painting expressed the use of design principles and the elements . The theme of the painting the Bullfight is Man verses Beast. Because Pablo Picasso uses emphasis, negative shapes and linear perspective. Yes , he use emphasis to support his theme by placing the dead horses at the bottom left corner of the painting to draw more attention . Picasso uses negative shapes , primary colors and dark colors to distinguish the figures in the stands. The artist uses linear perspective to show images sitting in the stands which make our eyes see dots representing figures in mass which occupies space. Picasso also uses linear perspective a form in which drawings or paintings are given apparent depth by showing parallel lines as converging on the horizon.

In conclusion, in comparing and contrasting the two. Picasso uses emphasis to show the subject and theme of both paintings. He uses design principles of elements to describe his paintings. For-example he use the design principle element variety to show the difference between the two art works. Picasso uses cool colors in the painting “The Tragedy” and warm colors in the painting “The Bullfight”. The two paintings have little similarities but have a lot of differences because one was painted during the Blue period and the other during the Rose period.

Dear Matt,

this essay is inappropriately done.

Each student is required to read Chapter three Themes and purposes from the book and then apply one or more of the themes that are appropriate for each work.

The purpose is to define the theme within the essay.
include the complete features of each work, and make connections and do critical thinking to demonstrate a transfer of information and identify the attributes of thework and created original discussion.

Dear Matt,

the rewrite does a better job of defining the theme and purpose of each painting.

The features of each work are complete

The "Tragedy" make connections between the painting and what was read in the text about theme and purpose. It appropriately transfers the information and make a good argument through original disucssion.

However, "Bullfight" appears to fall short of its goal.

The essay says that Picasso pursues art for the sake of art in this work.

but then the essay contradicts itself by telling the reader that Bullfight is a sport to entertain.

If an artist records an event taking place, like the bullfight, wouldn't that come under a different theme? For example consider human experience - art and the here and now.

The essays are getting better organized and more focused.
